How to Replace Leaking Whirlpool Modular Refrigerator Freezer Ice Maker

I just wanted to show how bad my icemaker mold was leaking. I thought it was overflowing into the ice bin, but the water was actually leaking through the mold!

This was the first video I ever made for YouTube. I could never understand why so much of the ice in the bin was stuck together. I knew water had to be getting in there somehow, but I never realized that the mold could corrode and degrade so much as to let water leak through it. I had no idea it looked that bad either. I guess I never stuck my head in the freezer to take a look.
I had done quite a bit of searching on the internet for the correct whirlpool modular ice maker, but as it turns out, there are many models that use this same style, and they are interchangeable. I just looked it up based on the part numbers under the plastic white cap.
It was very easy to remove the old ice maker and install the new one. You just have to remove the two screws at the top and one screw at the bottom. Then, you will be able to unplug the electrical connector. Installing the new one is just as easy, but before I installed it, I had to cut out the back plastic piece for the water inlet tube. This was easy to do, and I realize I didn’t show it in the video, but I just followed the line that was on the plastic piece and it worked great. I just used a sharp utility knife. Once it was installed, I sat and watched it cycle one time just to make sure everything worked. After you’re done, you can just replace the white plastic cap on the end of the ice maker.
Click on the icemaker image below for a link to a few of the universal style ice makers similar to the one I used. Just enter your model number (found on the label inside of the refrigerator) into the amazon part finder and it will confirm which ones will work for your model.
