2001 Toyota PriusV – Replacing Front Brake Pads – Easy – DIY

Just a quick video showing how to replace the front brake pads on a 2013 Toyota PriusV.
These pads weren’t totally worn out, but after 175k miles, they were starting to make a little noise when braking.
These new pads work and sound great.

Tools Needed:
Large Screwdriver, or small pry bar
14mm wrench or socket
17mm wrench if the caliper slide pins spin when removing the caliper installation bolts
Sil Glyde brake grease

The first thing you need to do is push the caliper piston back inside the caliper body. You can do this using the large screwdriver or small pry bar. Just insert it into the opening on the side of the caliper and pry so that the old brake pad will push the caliper back in.
Next, you can remove the two small caliper installation bolts with a 14mm wrench or socket (I used a deep socket and long handle socket wrench in the video). Sometimes the caliper slide pins will spin and you will need to hold them in place with the 17mm open end wrench.
Once the bolts are out, you can carefully remove the caliper from the rotor by lifting it to the side and upward out of the way of the brake pads. I usually set it on top of the rotor, but sometimes people like to use wire or zip ties to hold it out of the way so that you won’t risk damaging the brake line if the caliper falls.
now that you have access to the old brake pads, you can remove them and put in the new ones. I like to use a little Sil Glyde brake grease on the back of the pad and at the ends which seems to allow the pad to move properly without binding, and the grease on the back of the pad or pad shim material, really seems to cut down on the brake noise as well.

Now, you can put the caliper back on and torque the small bolts that go into the slide pins to 25 ft. lbs.
Just remember to press on the brake pedal once or twice which will push the caliper back out to the proper adjustment.
Verify the master cylinder fluid level and you’re good to go.
Don’t forget to put the wheels back on first 🙂
