2005 Chevy Silverado Single Spring Rear Brakes (Brake Shoes Drum and Wheel Cylinder Replacement) – Video

Just another quick video showing how to change the rear brake shoes and brake wheel cylinder on a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Z 71 Off Road Truck.

I disconnected the parking brake cable at the wheel as you see in the video, but you can also disconnect the small section of the Parking Cable below the truck to give yourself more slack to make this connection at the brake lever easier.
There is a specialty tool made for these Single Spring type of brakes, and you can buy it here from Amazon:

I was able to pry this spring back in using a screwdriver and long handled needle nose pliers, but this specialty tool would have been much easier.

You might need a couple bolts size M10 x 1 to take off the drum. Or they might be 3/8″ bolts. I don’t remember which ones I used in the video.
You can also sometimes just hit the drum with a hammer to break it loose. I ended up having to use a flashlight and two small screwdrivers to back off the starwheel adjuster rod enough to get the drum off. (I didn’t show that in the video)
Needle nose vise grips are handy and this tool will help as well:

It’s also not a bad idea to put a little grease on the contact points of the metal sides of the new shoes and the backing plate.

Thanks for watching!
