2003 – 2007 Honda Accord – Oil Leak Fix – Replacing the VTEC Solenoid Gasket / Filter Screen – Easy!

Plus, this shows why using OEM parts does make a difference…

– Honda Genuine Filter, Spool Valve 15815-RAA-A02
– Dorman 917-176 Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid Filter Compatible with Select Acura / Honda Models (Shown in the video, but not used)
– Genuine Honda 15810-RAA-A03 Spool Valve Assembly if you need the whole thing or are getting error codes P2647 or P2646 this could be what you need. (don’t rely on the amazon vehicle fit confirmation. Use Google instead.)
– GEARWRENCH 3 Pc. Double-X® Hose Grip Plier Set – 82107
– Precision Hook and Pick Set for O-ring removal
– GEARWRENCH 3/8″ Drive Micrometer Torque Wrench 30-250 in/lbs. – 85061
– Honda 15400-PLM-A02 Oil Filters – Case of 5 (amazon says these don’t fit, but they do.)
– Honda OEM 94109-14000 Oil Crush Washers/Drain Plug Gasket (10)

Just a quick video showing how I fixed a common oil leak on my 2007 Honda Accord with the K24 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. The VTEC Solenoid is attached to the back of the cylinder head on the passenger side with three 10mm bolts and two electrical harness connectors and a couple plastic clips. I ordered both Dorman and OEM Honda gaskets and I decided to use the Honda brand gasket because it fit better.
When you take off the VTEC Solenoid, it will leak quite a bit of engine oil, so make sure to have some cardboard down, or a drain pan to catch the oil. We also decided to change the oil at the same time we replaced this vtec gasket/screen/filter. If you do change your oil, and you need to reset the oil life % and turn off the small orange ‘wrench light’, here’s a video on how to do that: https://youtu.be/5iwxgQzjeAU
It’s very important to change your oil frequently and do not let it get low in these vehicles to keep a healthy properly operating Vtec system. These K-Series Engines will sometimes buck and jerk and run poorly or in ‘limp mode’ until you get the VTEC System fixed and filled back up with oil. There’s another small filter/screen/gasket on the passenger side of the engine. You may have to take off the power steering pump to get to it, but it’s a good idea to check/change that at the same time you do this one. Also, the VTC Actuator Valve a.k.a. oil control valve is on the passenger side of the engine and it might need to be checked and cleaned out as well and the O-ring replaced. Both are also easy to do, but we had already done them when we replaced the ‘stretched’ timing chain on this engine.
(that was fun.)

Tools needed:
10mm deep socket and stubby ratchet
Brake Cleaner
Small hook or pick to remove the old gasket
Small screwdriver or needle nose pliers (Or the Hose Grip Pliers that I used) to remove the electrical connections on the top of the solenoid.
Small Torque wrench that can read in Inch Pounds.
