1997 Lexus LX450 How to fix a Hood that falls down – Replace Hood Lift Struts! – Toyota Land cruiser

Just a quick video showing how easy it is to replace the Hood lift struts on a 1997 Lexus LX 450 – the same as the 80 series Toyota Landcruiser FJ80.

You will need:
12mm wrench or crescent wrench
12mm socket and/or socket wrench

This is a quick video showing how easy it is to change the hood lift support struts.
The replacement struts were identical to the oem ones, and they just bolted right on.

First, you will prop the hood up with something, or have someone hold it up for you while you change these struts.
You will need to loosen and remove the top part of the strut where it is threaded right into the hood.
This is done with a 12mm wrench, or a crescent wrench can be used as well.

Next, you can remove the bottom bolt which is easily accessed with a 12mm socket and a socket wrench. Save this bolt as you will be reusing it.
The new struts are side specific, and there is a small ‘L’ or small ‘R’ embossed or engraved into the bottom part that attaches to the vehicle.
Just make sure you are installing the ‘L’ strut on the driver’s side of the vehicle, and the ‘R’ strut on the passenger side.

You can reinstall the bottom of the strut in the vehicle by lining up the metal part that sticks out with the hole on the vehicle.
Now put the lower bolt back in and tighten it.

For the top part of the strut, you may have to push up on the hood a little bit to align the hole with the threaded bolt attached to the strut.
Just make sure you don’t cross thread this bolt, and once you have it started, you can tighten it with the 12mm wrench.

I will also be posting a video soon of these struts below which are for a 2001 Toyota Avalon:
